Last Sunday, Ben Carson announced that he is running for president. I don’t know much about the man. I’ve read that he was quite a brilliant pediatric neurosurgeon. (He retired in 2013.) Wikipedia has a list of his many awards and achievements. I’ll reserve judgement on what I think of him as a candidate, but there’s little doubt that he’s a very impressive guy.
Oh, and he’s black.
Here’s what MSNBC political pundit Michelle Bernard had to say about him:
[Ben Carson] probably went to Yale and University of Michigan for medical school because of affirmative action and because of social problems and didn’t end up like many of the black men that we see in prison today in Baltimore, where he came from, because of these same social problems.
Bernard also explained why Carson has been critical of Barack Obama:
He drank the kool-aid…. He has the pull-yourself-up-from-the-bootstraps story. Conservatives said we love you and he thought, “Oh, they love me, so now I’ll just say everything negative I can about Barack Obama.”
A few thoughts about these loathsome remarks:
1) How is this not blatantly racist? This man is literally a brain surgeon, apparently one of brightest and most respected in his field. Yet Bernard’s unsupported assumption, and pronouncement before a national audience, is that he “probably” only made it due to Affirmative Action.
2) Affirmative Action does a great disservice to Blacks by casting doubt on everything they achieve. If even the accomplishments of a brilliant man like Ben Carson are so casually dismissed as the result of Affirmative Action, how can any black shake the suspicion that he didn’t earn his accomplishments?
3) I’m having trouble imagining who MSNBC’s target audience is if this is their contribution to the national discussion. It’s no wonder they are going belly up.
4) Note the condescension toward Blacks in Bernard’s second quote above. It doesn’t occur to her that Carson might be capable of thinking for himself and forming his own opinions of Obama’s policies. It makes more sense to her that Carson is a trained monkey, willing to do and say anything to gain the approval of Kool-Aid drinking conservatives.
Michelle Bernard is one disgusting human being.
